How will this successful UNC basketball season turn out?

Success is measured differently by almost everyone. Some people use wealth or status as markers; for others, it is health or family; and for still others, it’s if your team beats your biggest rival in their stadium on the day their coach celebrates his retirement. The fact is that people have varying opinions on what success looks like.

That certainly translates to this year’s UNC basketball team. For some Tar Heel fans, anything short of playing for a national championship is not a successful season. Given the up-and-down nature of the program over the last six to seven years, others probably just want to see an improvement over last year’s poor results (compared to UNC history). Other fans will have a checklist: Did they win the ACC? A top-four seed in the NCAA tournament? Playing beyond (or even during) the first weekend of the NCAA tournament?

It’s the question of the day from today’s Tar Heel blog: What result will make you feel like this season is a success?

At the start of the season, I predicted the Heels finish fifth in the ACC and earn a sixth seed in the NCAA tournament. Currently, UNC is fifth in the ACC and should be a six seed in the NCAA tournament (I also predicted that Carolina would beat Michigan State and lose to Georgia Tech, so there you go). I feel like that is the case and that an appearance in the Sweet 16 would be the bare minimum necessary for me to personally consider the season a success. Caleb Wilson is producing one of the best freshman seasons in UNC history, Veesaar has become an anchor in the paint and the rest of the roster is talented enough to potentially do more. A win against Duke would go a long way toward making this season worth celebrating as well.

So let us know in the comments: What needs to happen for you to consider this UNC basketball season a success?
