Michael Siani finds his way back to the Dodgers

Michael Siani’s offseason roller coaster came full circle to make a second stop in Los Angeles, as the center fielder was claimed by the Dodgers off waivers from the New York Yankees on Tuesday. This comes 11 days after the Yankees claimed him off waivers from the Dodgers.

It’s been a busy offseason for the starting center fielder, who finished 2025 with the St. Louis Cardinals. Since then:

  • February 3: Claimed on waivers by the Dodgers from the Yankees

Siani was available this time because the Yankees designated the outfielder for assignment last Wednesday when New York acquired pitcher Angel Chivilli from the Angels. He was previously designated for assignment by Los Angeles when the The Dodgers finalized four-year contract for outfielder Kyle Tucker.

Over four seasons with the Reds and Cardinals, Siani is a .221/.277/.270 hitter in 160 games and 383 plate appearances, and 17 strikeouts above average in the outfield.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this deal involves the Dodgers making room for Siani, designated infielder Andy Ibáñez for fair assignment three weeks after signing a one-year contract worth $1.2 million.

Ibáñez was thought to bring depth to an infield that included Tommy Edman coming off right ankle surgery. As a right-handed hitter, Ibáñez, 33, has a career wRC+ of 115 against left-handed pitchers and could have spelled Max Muncy at third base when needed.

Now Ibáñez is in limbo, as the Dodgers have a week in which they will have to place him on waivers, trade him, or release him. As someone who has already been sent to the minors in 2023 by the Detroit Tigers, Ibáñez, if he clears waivers, can refuse any outright assignment to the minors.
