Report: Former Colts head coach in ‘ongoing’ talks to become Jets’ next offensive coordinator

According to SNYTV’s Connor Hughes, former Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich is in “ongoing” talks to become the New York Jets’ next offensive coordinator on 2nd year head coach Aaron Glenn’s revamped coaching staff:

Reich, 64, just served as Stanford’s interim head coach last year and now currently serves as a senior advisor to the Cardinal football program under general manager Andrew Luck, who originally recruited him to Palo Alto as a short-term transition coach.

Prior to that, Reich was fired mid-season as head coach of the Carolina Panthers in 2023 after going 1-10 with No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young, who struggled as a rookie.

Prior to that, Reich coached the Colts for five seasons, accumulating a 40-33-1 record, making the playoffs in 2018 and 2020, where in 2018, Indianapolis advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs.

Unfortunately, Reich and the Colts got off to another slow start in 2022 with a 3-5-1 record, and with late team owner Jim Irsay already unhappy with the failed acquisition of Carson Wentz during the previous offseason, Reich was fired around mid-season to replace him with retired Colts big center and ESPN analyst Jeff Saturday.

As far as Reich is concerned, the end of his tenure as a professional football coach with the Colts and Panthers was not ideal.

That being said, when Reich initially had his talented group of coordinators, offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni, defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and even defensive backs coach Jonathan Gannon – all of whom left to pursue NFL head coaching opportunities elsewhere, his Colts teams played much better from a leadership, fundamentals and accountability standpoint. This isn’t that different from what we saw with Glenn’s former head coach, head coach Dan Campbell, last season with the Detroit Lions, who missed the playoffs.

It will be interesting to see if Reich can regain his offensive MOJO in the Big Apple, where a new quarterback will likely start for the Jets during the 2026 campaign.

He could coach former Colts player AD Mitchell, who was traded in the Sauce Gardner deadline deal.
