Nebraska men’s basketball triumphs in shootout against Oklahoma

Nebraska men’s basketball (4-0) took on its first big challenge of the season on Saturday evening, facing the Oklahoma Sooners (2-2). After going into the locker room down by seven points, the Huskers came back strong in the second half, beating the Sooners 105-99.

Both teams shot well across the board, combining for 67 made field goals, 29 three-pointers and 41 made free throws. But Nebraska managed to outscore Oklahoma in every category, finishing 34 of 59 from the floor, 15 of 27 from beyond the arc and 22 of 28 from the foul line.

The Huskers mostly found the lead in the second half after finishing the first with a score of 51-44. Nebraska, in fact, trailed the entire first half and didn’t take the lead until midway through the second. The Huskers put up 61 points in the second half, shooting 18-of-28, 9-of-14 and 16-of-20, respectively.

Pryce Sandfort put together a career night to lead Nebraska to a victory. THE Iowa Hawkeyes Transfer scored a career-high 28 points after shooting 10 of 18 from the floor, 4 of 9 from three-point range and 4 of 4 from the free throw line. Sandfort also had a career-high seven assists.

Mast Rienk also scored 20 points on the night, totaling 26 after going 9 of 16, 5 of 7 and 3 of 4, respectively. Mast also co-led the Huskers in rebounds, collecting six. Cale Jacobsen also grabbed six rebounds and finished with 10 points after shooting 3 of 3 from the floor, 1 of 1 from beyond the arc and 3 of 6 from the free throw line.

Berke Büyüktuncel tied his career high in scoring, racking up 16 points after going 5 of 7, 1 of 1 and 5 of 6, respectively. Jamarques Lawrence rounded out Nebraska’s double-digit scorers, earning 14 points while shooting 5 of 8 from the floor, 3 of 5 from three-point range and 1 of 2 from the free throw line.

Nebraska remains on the road for its next two games, heading to Kansas City to compete in the Hall of Fame Classic next week. The Huskers open the tournament against New Mexico on Thursday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on Peacock.
