The NCAA DI BOD is “moving toward” a proposal today to “create revenue distribution for schools and conferences based on team performance in the women’s basketball tournament,” according to USA TODAY’s Steve Berkowitz. The move would “solve another of the many problems” the NCAA has attempted to address “as a result of inequities between the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.” The topic is on the agenda for today’s board meeting, and it is “likely” the board “will propose a plan that could be considered at Thursday’s scheduled meeting” of the NCAA BOG. Berkowitz notes that the proposal is expected to be voted on by all DI members at the NCAA convention in January. If approved, schools could “begin earning credits for their performance in the 2025 tournament, with payments beginning in 2026.” NCAA President Charlie Baker said: expressed support for the idea“, especially following the new organizational change eight-year, $920 million broadcast deal with ESPN. The NCAA “allocates” about $65 million of the $115 million average annual value of the deal to the women’s basketball tournament. The new funds – and the total allocated to the women’s basketball tournament – “will form the basis of the new revenue pool” (USA TODAY, 8/6).
