Jaylon Tyson, a key part of Cal’s 2023-24 roster will be immediately eligible to play following his transfer from Texas Tech, joining the team in Friday night’s contest.
At issue was Tyson’s waiver request to be immediately eligible to play following his second transfer, having first transferred from Texas to Texas Tech.
Tyson requested his waiver after experiencing inappropriate verbal abuse from former Texas Tech head coach Mark Adams, where he compared Tyson, who is African American, to a slave and him as a master, who resigned after the incident.
Tyson immediately gives the Bears a big boost on both ends of the court as an elite defender and rebounder who can play multiple positions effectively and is an immediate threat on the offensive end of the court. Reports from summer and fall training presented Tyson as a clear leader and energizer within the team, which had a huge impact on his team’s fortunes. As a sophomore at Texas Tech, Tyson averaged 10.7 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 40 percent from the perimeter.
