After the original Oct. 31 deadline to reach a new deal, the WNBA and players agreed to an extension of the deadline, with a new date of Jan. 9 to reach agreement on a new CBA. As negotiations on the CBA continue, it is becoming increasingly clear that both WNBA and players remain distant in negotiations. This prompted the NBA commissioner Adam Silver to acknowledge that he could participate in WBA CBA negotiations if he deemed it necessary, according to Annie Costabile of Front Office Sports.

Speaking to the media before the NBA Cup championship game on Tuesday, Adam Silver remains optimistic about achieving a new WNBA CBA. amid ongoing negotiations.
“We are available to do whatever is necessary to help close a deal,” Silver said. “I am encouraged that they have extended the deadline once again to January. Presumably the parties would not have been willing to do so if they did not believe there was a constructive path to reaching an agreement.”
Amid a major surge in popularity and revenue, the WNBA is poised to become what could become a historic CBA. While salaries and income have been at the forefront of negotiations between the players’ union and the league, they are not the only issues important to players.
Other factors such as parental care and mental health care have also been key issues on the players’ side. And one interesting proposal put forward by the WNBPA is the creation of two developmental spots for each team in addition to the current maximum of 12 players allowed. This would likely help ease the burden of in-season injuries and give WNBA coaches more work.
