Former Penn State football star to pose in ESPN’s Body Issue

ESPN’s Body Issue will feature a familiar face from Penn State this year. Former Nittany Lion football star and current Team USA member Ali Krieger will appear in the issue when it releases in July. ESPN published a preview from his interview and photo session entitled Under Ali Krieger Uniform Thursday.

β€œIt’s important to show your vulnerabilities,” Krieger told ESPN. “I’m proud of my body, I’m proud of my sport, I’m proud to be a female athlete. Being naked is just another part of that. It’s real. It’s raw. It’s honest.”

Krieger racked up a ton of accolades as a standout midfielder and defender for Penn State from 2003 to 2006. A two-time All-American, Krieger was named co-defensive player of the year and was a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy. She was named team captain during her time with the Nittany Lions and helped lead the team to four Back-to-back Big Ten championships.

The athletic prowess of the defenders helped lead the U.S. team during the World Cup this summer. She started all four games and played a ton of minutes. She is a key player in the strong U.S. defense and has helped lead the tough, physical play the United States is known for.

She told ESPN: “I have to win, even if I’m just playing ping-pong. If I lose, I’m so upset and I need a second. But I think that’s how it is with a lot of people at this level – we’re all super competitive.”

The United States will need its competitive spirit to stay lit if it seeks to advance in the World Cup. Look for Krieger in the USA’s next game this Friday against China and keep an eye out for his appearance on ESPN’s Body Issue on July 10.
