March Madness is fast approaching and the No. 5 seed Illinois Fighting Illini is in the thick of the national championship conversation.

Having I won 12 in a row entering a critical Saturday night game vs. Michigan State At East Lansing, coach Brad Underwood knows his team well.

“We have one that says, ‘Don’t drink the poison.'” Underwood told reporters.

And it’s not just a “saying,” Underwood said of his team’s mantra.

“And it’s something we talk about literally every day,” Underwood said. “Don’t read it, don’t talk about it. We haven’t talked about anything (about national attention). We just don’t talk about it. It’s just the next day. It’s very simple, banal, the Every Day Guys mentality. And then we talk every day, 100 times a day, about how good we are. We have to play and live up to our standards.”

So far, that’s exactly what they’ve done, even in the absence of guard Kylan Boswell, who healed a broken hand. Illinois dominated the Northwestern Wildcats Wednesday night at the State Farm Center, 84-44, to sweep the season series.

As long as the Illini continue to shoot consistently, anything is possible.

After all, though, the games will only become more important as the conference tournament gets closer.

The same goes for the winning streak.
