Katie British Boulter recovered from a shoot to beat Irina-Camelia Begu in the second round to Indian Wells.
The Romanian won the first set in an equality break, but Boulter then took care to win 6-7 (2-7) 6-3 6-0 in California.
Boulter, 28, only plays his third tournament of the year and had a Bye in the first round while Begu, ranked 74 in the world, defeated Ann Li in the United States.
The English woman will face a much more severe test in the third round when she played Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan, the seventh seed having beat Suzan Lamens from the Netherlands 6-3 6-3.
Boulter fell to 38 in the world ranking that has not played since its release Australian open second round in January.
Elsewhere, the former world number two of Tunisia Jabeur was beaten 6-3 6-1 by the Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine, when there was the victory for the compatriot of Yastremska, Marta Kostyuk.
The 18th seeded defeated American Robin Montgomery 6-1 6-3.
The second seeded from Poland Iga Swiatek faces France Caroline Garcia later on the third day of the action, before the fourth seeded and the favorite of Maison Jessica Pegula plays another post, Magda Linette.
