Dunleavy reveals where contract negotiations stand with Kuminga and Moody

Dunleavy reveals where contract negotiations stand with Kuminga and Moody originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody’s respective futures with the Warriors remain uncertain, but general manager Mike Dunleavy brought a sense of clarity last week.

Both Golden State 2021 NBA Draft lottery picks, entering the final year of their rookie contracts, were able to start negotiate their rookie extensions with the Warriors in July.

Nearly three months later, no deal has been finalized – and time is running out. The deadline for each contract extension is October 22, the day before the Warriors’ 2024-25 NBA regular season begins. Although pen has yet to be put to paper, Dunleavy remains optimistic about the state of negotiations and has made it clear that he wants both players in a Warriors uniform for a very long time.

“Yes, we are currently working on this issue with them and their representation,” Dunleavy told reporters Thursday. “We still have a few weeks left. Good, positive conversations, without getting into too much detail. I think regardless of whether we do anything or not, we want these guys to be here.”

After averaging just over nine points per game in his first two seasons with the Warriors in a limited and admittedly frustrating fluctuating role, Kuminga made a major jump as a third year during the 2023-24 season, with an average of 16.1 points shooting 52.9 percent, with 4.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 26.3 minutes in 74 games (46 starts).

Meanwhile, Moody hopes his patience will be rewarded after playing a three year waiting game with coach Steve Kerr. He has shown flashes of his potential, but he needs consistent minutes on the court to fully showcase his talent.

If the Warriors fail to reach a deal with Kuminga and/or Moody before the Oct. 22 deadline, the player will become a restricted free agent next offseason.

But regardless of whether no, one or both deals are reached, Dunleavy is sure that Kuminga, Moody and himself are without a doubt on the same page on one thing.

“Just because you don’t get an extension doesn’t mean they won’t be there for a long time,” Dunleavy said. “We’ll still have their free agency rights if we don’t come to a deal by the 21st. And I think for them the most important thing is we’ll get through these next few weeks with a deal or no deal. , but all that matters is that they have good seasons, whether they sign an extension or not.

“I think we all operate under the same thought process and we’ll see how it goes.”
