UNDATED (AP) – Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan and Florida State were atop the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season, followed by Washington and Oregon, undefeated. The NCAA is investigating a sign-stealing scheme that allegedly involved in-person screening banned by Michigan. Selection committee chairman Boo Corrigan said the allegations against Michigan were not part of the debate over the Wolverines’ ranking. He called it an NCAA problem, not a PSC problem.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A frustrated Dabo Swinney defended his Clemson career to a radio caller who questioned his performance as one of college football’s highest-paid coaches. The exchange took place Monday night on Swinney’s weekly show during the season, when someone identified only as “Tyler at Spartanburg” asked why Swinney was being paid so much to go 4-4 this season. Swinney said it’s demanding fans like Tyler who are part of the problem, because their expectations of what should happen are greater than their appreciation of what has been accomplished.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State women’s basketball coach Brooke Wyckoff has been diagnosed with breast cancer, although the school says her long-term prognosis is “excellent.” Wyckoff, 43, had surgery Tuesday to move a cancerous mass. Wyckoff will not coach the 18th-ranked Seminoles in their exhibition game Wednesday against Clayton State, but expects to be on the sideline for Monday’s season opener against Charleston Southern. The State of Florida says Wyckoff is “recovering well” at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare.

UNDATED (AP) – More than 1,200 women’s basketball players entered the transfer portal last year. Just over 1,000 people found new schools to play. With so many talented players available, the speed with which coaches can turn bad teams into good and great ones has changed. LSU coach Kim Mulkey has been one of the most active users of the portal, making the Tigers a super team. The school won its first national championship last season. In recent years, she has added Angel Reese, Van Lith and Aneesah Morrow. All three earned All-America honors last year. All three will play for LSU this season.

UNDATED (AP) – Weber State’s Dillon Jones and UNC Asheville’s Drew Pember had every reason to decide they had done enough at this level. Yet both returned to school in part because they wanted their college careers to have a better ending. Jones’ team suffered a double overtime loss in a Big Sky Conference semifinal. Pember’s team reached the NCAA tournament but was eliminated in the first round. Now they’re back for another season as two of the most decorated players in the traditional single-bid conferences.

UNDATED (AP) – The transfer portal has become the go-to place for college basketball coaches to immediately upgrade their rosters. Transfers can come in and have an immediate impact and many of the top programs have taken advantage of that. UConn and San Diego State, 2023 national runners-up, both moved into key roles. Just like Kansas and Baylor, the two previous national champions. Stricter NCAA guidelines on duplicate transfers have made navigating the portal a little trickier. With many sophomore transfer waivers denied, coaches now must decide whether pursuing a player who has played at multiple schools is worth it.
