Jets coach Scott Arniel told reporters Heinola would be re-evaluated in a week, but also said, “It’s not good.”
Selected by the Jets in the first round of the 2019 NHL Draft, Heinola has dealt with a number of injuries since the start of his professional career. After playing 41 regular-season games with the Manitoba Moose last year, he scored 10 goals and added 17 assists for 27 points.
In five AHL seasons, Heinola had 102 points in 152 games. He also played 35 regular-season NHL games and had 11 points.
With Heinola suffering from the infection, it throws a spanner in the works of what appeared to be a solid opportunity for the young defenseman to earn a spot with the Jets coming out of camp.
