It’s only a matter of time before Julien Alvarez is officially announced as Atletico Madrid latest acquisition. The club has reportedly reached an agreement with Manchester Cityby purchasing the rights from Álvarez for 75 million euroswith an additional 20 million euros in bonuses. The considerable sum spent on this transfer, as well as other recent signings, is put pressure on Atlético’s financial strategy.

Diego Simeoneafter a titleless 2023-24 season, requested reinforcements for the team. Atletico Madrid finished fourth Leaguewere eliminated in the Copa del Rey semi-finals by Athletics clublost to Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cupand I left the Champions League in the quarter-finals against Borussia Dortmund.

Given these results, Simeone required one or two signatures per position. The management of Atletico, led by the president Enrique Cerezo and sports director Andrea Bertaresponded by securing four key signings: Julian Alvarez, Alexander Sorloth, Conor GallagherAnd Robin Le Normand.

To finance these transfers, Atletico had to get rid of several players. Alvaro Morata was sold to AC Milan For 13 million eurosAnd Çağlar Söyüncü moved to Fenerbahçe For 8.5 million euros. However, the biggest sale will probably be Samu Omorodion transfer to Chelsea For 40 million euros.

Atletico Madrid’s financial challenge after signing Julian Alvarez

Atletico Madrid passed around 200 million euros on Sörloth, Le Normand, Gallagher and Julian Alvarez. The club paid 32 million euros for Sörloth, 34.5 million euros for Le Normand and 42 million euros for Gallagher. The deal for Julian Alvarez will cost €75 million initially, with a further €20 million payable if certain performance targets are met.

These substantial investments were made possible thanks to the aforementioned player sales. However, as reported by the Spanish media AS, Atletico Madrid no longer have funds for further signings.

According to the report, there aren’t many players left who could be sold. João Felix is the most likely candidate, having been on loan to Chelsea and Barcelona in recent seasons.
