The Pittsburgh Penguins currently occupy second place in the Metropolitan Division standings. With that, there’s a good chance they’ll look to add to their roster before the 2026 NHL trade deadline.
With the Penguins emerging as potential buyers this season, they are now being asked to address one of their notable trade needs.

In a recent article for Bleacher ReportAdam Gretz argued that the Penguins’ main trade need before the deadline is adding to their defensive depth.
“They have plenty of forward depth in the NHL and AHL, but could definitely use more defensive depth. The defense has overperformed this season and improved quickly as the season has progressed, but Kyle Dubas should focus on additional depth over the next few weeks,” Gretz wrote.
It’s certainly hard to disagree with Gretz’s point of view here, as it’s clear the Penguins would benefit from an addition to their blue line. This is especially true when we see that they have been dealing with the injury bug this season.
Another right-handed defenseman, in particular, would be great for the Penguins to add to their roster. Some names that have been rumored this season include Zach Whitecloud, Connor Murphy and Timothy Liljegren.
5 Penguin defensemen expected to target at trade deadline
It will be very interesting to see what kind of moves the Penguins make before the deadline from here. They undoubtedly performed well enough for Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas to add them to his roster.
