EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The NCAA has released a statement on eligibility in the wake of the Tom Izzo case. comments about players with G-League experience being allowed to sign for college teams. Izzo called the situation “ridiculous” and “embarrassing” in part.
UConn head coach Dan Hurley showed his support for Izzo, and coaches across the country spoke out on the subject, prompting a response from the NCAA.
“No more schools”, statement reads: “recruit and enroll individuals who have competed professionally – including many with experience in international leagues and who may find college sports more attractive given the financial benefits now available. NCAA rules allow players who competed professionally before their collegiate enrollment to retain their eligibility for college sports, although in some cases players may lose seasons of eligibility due to late registration.
“Each player’s situation is unique, and these issues arise at a time when the NCAA’s eligibility rules are the subject of repeated lawsuits, with judges banning some of those rules. In making its eligibility decisions, the NCAA strives to treat prospective student-athletes, whether domestic or international, as consistently as possible, given the wide range of backgrounds that may be presented.”
“These cases are likely to continue, and this uncertainty underscores the importance of our collaboration with Congress to resolve conflicting court decisions that serve to deprive high school athletes of the ability to compete and create unfair competitive environments for current college athletes.”
“Schools seeking information on the eligibility of their recruits should continue to coordinate with the NCAA Eligibility Center.”
