January 28 – Combeland – “Keep your cool, give yourself a chance to win the basketball match.”
It was the message of Fort Hill Thad Burner’s head coach at halftime with his team facing a deficit of 34-30 to the south. The sentries resisted the storm with their defensive effort, Jabril Daniels sank a late crucial triple and Gamil Daniels gave them an advance of a point with a frank throw with 6.1 seconds.
Fort Hill rightly crowned the match with a last defensive stand, while Liam Hamilton blocked 3-point 3-point to the buzzer to give the most classified sentries a 57-56 victory on South No. 2 Monday evening.
“Our effort in the second period was really good, our defensive effort,” said Burner. “I thought it was a little difference. We were fighting.
“They brought their composure out in the second half. This is something we highlighted at the start of the year. If we had done it (game) in September, we would probably have lost at 20.”
Fort Hill (5-5, 2-0 Western Maryland Athletic Conference) pushed his four-game victories sequence after a start of 1-5. Southern fell to 7-4 (3-2 Westmac) after his second consecutive defeat.
The Rams had the chance to win in the last seconds for a second consecutive match.
By dragging 57-56, Southern had 5.2 seconds to spend the duration of the court from a dead time. The leader of the Rams Brayden Upole, who finished with a summit of 23 points, took a look at the top of the key, but Hamilton obtained a finger on his current trey.
Southern wanted to get the ball to his top scorer Jared Haskiell, who ended with 17 points. However, Jabril Daniels denied basketball.
“We were trying to get a dribble transfer to Jared, but they defended him,” said southern head coach Hunter Broadwater. “We should probably have filled earlier to give us a chance in attack.”
Fort Hill had a balanced offense with five scorers who collected at least nine points.
Jabril Daniels led the pack with 13 points and five assists, Hamilton collected 12 points and eight rebounds, Landen Sweitzer collected 10 points and Gamil Daniels and Jameson Powell added nine points each.
“This is our identity on the offensive side,” said Burner. “It is five guys who must be ready to play with each other.”
Meanwhile, Upole and Haskiell combined for 40 of the 56 Southern points. Graham Harvey finished third in the team with five points.
Fort Hill Limited Haskiell – A scorer of 22.9 points per match – six points in the second period. Jabril Daniels was his main defender.
“All day long, the emphasis was put to try to remove it as much as possible,” said Burner. “It also brought us in some problems with help. … During the game, we started to change the ball screens instead of doubled it.
“Towards the end of the match, we just wanted to deny it.”
Haskiell excited the crowd at the beginning of the fourth quarter by jumping a passage and throwing a two -handed jam in transition on the other hand.
By focusing on Haskiell’s judgment, Upole exploded for 16 points in the first half, buried four 3 points.
Fort Hill held the leader at seven points after half-time.
“The last games, they kept Jared as a madman,” said Broadwater. “In the third quarter and at the start of the fourth quarter, they started to do the same in Brayden.
“This is when we have to be better with the other three players. Get them open blows. When they keep them, there is no help.”
Southern led the third quarter, and Fort Hill did not take his first lead from the second half until Powell buried a trey with 6:36 to play for an advantage of 47-46.
A par tie at 51 years, Jacob Brown de Southern shook in a trey with 2:30 to play, but Fort Hill found an advantage of 56-54 after Jabril Daniels placed a 3-point corner with 1:01 at the clock.
Haskiell sank a pair of free throws to level the scoring at 56 with 32.7 seconds to play.
Gamil Daniels was the victim of a fault on a trip to the hoop on the next possession of Fort Hill, and he struck 1 of the 2 strokes to give the sentries what turned out to be the decisive point of the night.
Although none of the two teams has performed effectively in the half-terrain, the two squads impressed their defensive intensity.
Fort Hill had scored at least 70 points in his last three games, victories on Alney (71-59), Frankfort (72-43) and Keyser (71-42), but the Rams held them under 60 years for give a chance.
“I thought we were a little better defensively today,” said Broadwater. “Keep the scoring, which helps. We had big troubles, made them too much to let them come back in the game.
“We were proud of their defensive intensity, their attention to details, most of them. It was much better. Effort and intensity all the time.”
Southern faces a difficult test on Wednesday when he tries to end a two -game slippage. The Rams welcome the county of Tucker (12-1) at 7:30 p.m.
Fort Hill left until Friday when he welcomes the Faith of the County of Mountain Ridge (3-6, 2-1 Westmac) at 7 p.m.
For at least another match, Fort Hill avoided becoming the third n ° 1 team in as many weeks to be eliminated.
“Basketball right now is the Far Wild West,” said Burner. “It’s open for everyone.
“I’m going to take our guys in a dog fight.”
