By now, every New Jersey Devils fan should know what’s going on with RFA forward Dawson Mercer and his contract situation.
Yesterday we reported that negotiations were getting closer, but no agreement had been reached. The deal would be for two to three years with an AAV of $3.5 million to $4 million.

That holds true again today, as the first day of training camp and media day begins.
But don’t panic, Devils fans. If the reports are accurate and both sides work to reach an agreement, Mercer could join the training camp roster as early as this weekend.
Once the two sides have the basic agreement in place, it won’t take long to iron out the final details and before you know it, Mercer will be completing his medical tests and participating in Devils camp.
Over the past few days, if not a week, NHL RFA players have been reaching agreements to avoid missing training camp. Toronto Maple Leafs‘ Nicolas Robertson And Los Angeles Kings‘ Arthur Kaliyev Here are some names who have signed one-year contracts to join their clubs.

The difference between them and Mercer is the length of the contract, and he didn’t ask for a trade. He and the Devils both want him back as soon as possible, and for that reason, he should be joining the team soon and playing preseason games.
