Matteo Berrettini has refuted claims his relationship with Melissa Satta had a negative impact on his career.
Berrettini’s poor form during the 2023 season has been a popular topic of discussion in the tennis world. The Italian’s alleged lack of work ethic and alleged priority given to his relationship with Melissa Satta have been cited as potential reasons for his disappointing results.
On February 18, former Italian tennis player Nicola Pietrangeli critical Matteo Berrettini’s work ethic and suggested the 26-year-old was more dedicated to advertising than tennis. Additionally, some Ennis fans recently realized vitriol towards Berretini and his girlfriend for enjoying a day at the beach in the midst of his poor form.
In an interview with Eurosport on April 9, Matteo Berrettini chose to focus on the more positive side of the criticism directed against him. He stressed that the attention and scrutiny he received is a testament to the popularity of tennis in Italy.
“It makes me smile, on the one hand it’s positive because it means that tennis is one of the most popular sports in Italy. Everyone talks about it and sees me,” Berrettini said.
Nonetheless, the world number 22 questioned the absurdity of claims his relationship was affecting his career. He pointed to the rise of social media as a catalyst for such criticism. The Italian said he was happy with his relationship and that was what ultimately mattered to him.
“On commitment I find it difficult to answer, I can’t imagine how a relationship can allow you to not do your job, but people talk. We live in the age of social networks, where everyone Everyone can say anything and it seems to me that it is generalized. “Education has been lost. But in the end, I’m happy, that’s what counts,” he added.
“I paid the price for this routine” – Matteo Berrettini on his recurring injuries

In the same interview Matteo Berrettini lamented his recurring injuries, which he believes are caused by the busy tournament schedule.
“In recent years I have always gone to six thousand, I have played many matches and unfortunately I have suffered many injuries,” Berrettini said. “I paid the price for this routine.”
He added that he was working hard to get back into shape in time for the Monte-Carlo Masters.
“I do a lot of work to play as many matches as possible. It’s a tournament that is particularly close to my heart, I have the confidence to feel the same sensations as some time ago,” he said.
Matteo Berrettini will face Maxime Cressy in the opening match in Monte Carlo on April 10.
