German international Mario Götze is unlikely to move to Major League Socceror MLS, in the January transfer window. Picture recently reported that the midfielder is considering finishing his illustrious career in the United States. However, Götze still has unfinished business with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Götze signed a four-year contract with the Bundesliga in 2022. This means that his current contract does not expire until 2026. Although he has been linked several times with a move to MLS, Götze remains an important piece of the German elite puzzle.

31-year-old midfielder helps German club advance in Europe

The creative midfielder has started 11 of the total of 16 games in all competitions so far this season under Dino Toppmöller. He also came on as a substitute in the remaining five matches. With Götze’s contribution, the club currently occupies seventh place in the Bundesliga table. This is the same place where Eintracht finished in the 2022/23 campaign.

But Eintracht has already qualified for the round of 16. Europa League Conference. Toppmöller’s team still have two matches to play in the group stage. The German team won its three European matches with Götze in the squad. They will then face PAOK Salonika on Thursday in the fifth round of the group stage.

Despite suffering serious injuries, Götze found a home with Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.

Toppmöller admitted that Götze would likely find himself in the club’s starting XI for the match. “Mario is still a candidate for the starting XI” proclaimed the Eintracht coach. “We said before the Stuttgart game that we had to see how we could put him under pressure. It’s possible he starts against Salonika, the option is definitely there.

Inter Miami of the MLS had already tried to recruit Mario Götze in 2020

With Götze still contributing in Europe, he will have to wait until now to move to MLS. THE Germany the international had previously rejected a chance to join InterMiami in 2020. Then aged 28 claims that he was “not yet finished with Europe” at the time.

Götze was asked directly about a possible move to MLS in 2020. He claimed the timing was not right. “Very interesting”, the midfielder replied to the notion. “But that’s not a topic for me at the moment. I focus on Europe. I have some ambitious goals and I want to win the Champions League. This is something I work for every day, every session. I don’t want to end my career before winning this title.

He was a free agent in the summer of 2020 after his departure Borussia Dortmund. Götze eventually signed a two-year contract with PSV Eindhoven later this year. In addition to wanting to stay in Europe three years ago, the midfielder was also offered lower salaries from Miami. Götze previously made around $11 million per year with Dortmund. However, MLS offered the German star an annual salary closer to $6.5 million.

David Beckham’s team instead turned to Frenchman Blaise Matuidi. FC Cincinnati was also linked to Götze at the time. The Queen City has historically had a large German population.
