Kodai Senga will make a rehab start Saturday for Triple-A Syracuse, and his return to Put will be the next one if all goes well.
Senga is expected to throw 30 to 35 pitches in one or two innings Saturday, according to the Mets manager. Carlos Mendoza.
Mendoza noted that if Senga plays well, he could be activated next Friday against the Brewers in Milwaukee.
As for Senga’s role if he returns, it will likely be as a starter, but he won’t be able to throw deep at first due to the fact that he won’t be extended.
Speaking to reporters at Citi Field on Wednesday, Senga said he hopes to make a one-inning appearance with Triple-A Syracuse before their season ends Sunday.
Senga, who threw a workout Tuesday, said the most important thing is that he feels fully healthy before trying to get back on the mound.
“The day I come off (the injured list) is not up to me,” Senga said, through a translator. “I’m just preparing to be on the field and be able to contribute, and I know with the team being in a very difficult situation and a good position, I have to be 100 percent to contribute, and I don’t want to come back less than 100 percent.”
“I’ve worked my butt off and put all my time into this,” he added later. “I know if it doesn’t go well, I’m just going to sit on the bench cheering for my teammates, so I’ve got to make it work.”
SNY’s Andy Martino previously reported that the Put are “increasingly optimistic” that Senga will launch again this season.
