Roger Federer’s former coach Paul Annacone recently shared his thoughts on the prospects of world number 6 Holger Rune’s new coaching partnership with tennis great Boris Becker.
Becker and Rune embarked on a new journey together just a few days ago. Rumors of them working together started after the Dane shared a photo of them training on Instagram. This was later officially confirmed by the German during an interview with Eurosport.
The coaching change came after Rune parted ways with Serena Williams’ former coach. Patrick Mouratoglou after his first round exit at the 2023 US Open. It is worth noting that the Dane has enjoyed great success with the Frenchman, winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title at the Paris Masters last year and reaching the pinnacle of his career as world number 4.
Paul Annacone spoke on the subject of Boris Becker coaching Holger Rune in conversation with Tennis Channel’s Prakash Amritraj and said it was a “match made in heaven”.
“Look at what the coach situation is for me, it’s not always who it is, it’s how they combine, so you really don’t know. It should be a perfect match because of the way these two guys go about their business,” he said.
But the American quickly added that it was a “delicate situation” since Holger Rune’s mother, Anéképlays an important role in his career, and we will have to wait a little longer to see how the new partnership plays out.
“But look, it’s a tricky situation, isn’t it? Holger has a very strong parental figure in the picture. His mother has been there to help him, she’s helped him do a great job. Patrick Mouratoglou is no longer in the picture, so there’s no really simplistic equation as to whether it’s going to work or not until they do it for a while,” Annacone said.
“See how the personalities match, see if there’s buy-in, see if there’s philosophical agreement and see if everyone can stay in their lane and do what they’re supposed to do,” he said. -he adds.
Holger Rune and Boris Becker play their first tournament together at Swiss Indoors Basel 2023
Holger Rune and Boris Becker are currently playing their first tournament together at the 2023 edition of Swiss Indoors Basel, and it seems like they are doing well so far.
The Dane entered the ATP 500 tournament following a series of unfortunate events. He struggled during the Asian swing, facing early eliminations at the China Open and Shanghai Masters. He also failed to defend his title at the Stockholm Open.
However, Rune finally rallied under Becker’s guidance and beat Miomir Kecmanovic in a three-set first-round thriller in Basel. He came back from a set down to win the match with a score of 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. The top seed will next face Sebastian Baez on Thursday October 26.
