Tallon Griekspoor amazed Alexander Zverev 4-6, 7-6 (7/5) with a series, 7-6 (7/4) in the second round in Indian Wells on Friday, avenging a devastating loss for the German in Roland Garros last year.
Zverev, the world number two, which runs the field of the prestigious ATP Masters event with Jannik Sinner N ° 1 in the service of a three -month drug ban, is the first Indian series of Wells to lose its opening match from Andy Murray in 2017.
It was a cherished victory for Griekspoor, who had lost five consecutive games – including four last year – German.
This included a five sets at the French Open in which Griekspoor made a double break in the fifth in a defeat he called “absolute sorrow”.
“It was such a mental thing. I played so many battles against him and I had a chance, but they all followed his way,” said Griekspoor, who won his first victory over a player among the first five in his 19th attempt.
“I am incredibly proud of this performance and to get it through the line,” added the 28 -year -old.
Broken to Trail 5-6 in the third set, Zverev saved five match points in a 12th dramatic match, finally converting his fifth break in the match to force the equality break.
But Griekspoor sealed her during his first chance in the decision maker.
The defeat in a confrontation of the stadium court full of tension continued a dull race for Zverev since he fell to the sinner in the final of the Australian Open. After this defeat, he made early outing in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Acapulco.
“I still fight against him,” said Zverev about Griekspoor. “He played a good match. There is no doubt about it. But I have to look at myself a little, and it’s far from where I want to be.”
The American Marcos Giron joined Griekspoor to publish his first victory against a top-five player, overwhelming the fourth seeded Casper Ruud 7-6 (7/4), 3-6, 6-2.
Russian Daniil Medvedev, a finalist at Carlos Alcaraz in the past two years, has spent a 6-2, 6-2 victory over more than 71st Bu Yunchaokete in China.
Medvedev, fifth seeded, grouped against the desert’s cold night air with leggings under his shorts and long sleeves, dropped his service to open the match.
But he broke immediately and has never been seriously threatened despite the richness of long rallies.
“I will be surprised if he had more than five winners in the match,” said Medvedev. “I just knew I have to put the ball in court and run.”
– Swiatek safely through –
IGA Swiatek, the reigning female champion in this combined event ATP and WTA 1000, softened by its opening 6-2, 6-0 against the French veteran Caroline Garcia.
“I am happy to have been solid until the end, and I am just happy to have suited myself well to the conditions,” said Swiatek, who played when the temperature at the end of the afternoon fell and the breeze picked up.
“The first games are not easy and I did not know what to expect from Caro, but I am happy to be able to dominate from the start.”
Swiatek has converted six of his nine breaking points and was only shattered once in the 61 -minute victory.
The fourth American seeded Jessica Pegula also crossed, beating Magda Linette 6-4, 6-2.
“Honestly, I think that only managed the conditions,” said Pegula. “I felt like I could manage the side with the wind quite well and really enjoy using it for my service … and then to be a little grainy and to dig difficult points on the side that was against the wind.”
Mirra Andreeva, the 17-year-old Russian, who became the youngest WTA 1000 champion in Dubai last month, retaliated by 0-4 in the second set to beat Varvara Gracheva 70th from France late from Varvara Gracheva 7-5, 6-4 in another late match by Blowlown, Errard-Laden.
Andreeva, in the ninth row, reserved a third round meeting with Clara Tauson from Denmark, the woman she beat in the Dubai final.
Tauson advanced with a 7-6 (7/3), 7-5 against the Colombian Camila Osorio, who had ousted the quadruple Grand Slam champion, Naomi Osaka in the first round.
