Former Wisconsin star’s role in new program continues to shrink

Former Wisconsin star forward AJ Storr played just four minutes in Kansas’ 74-55 win over Arizona State on Wednesday.

Storr arrived around the eighth minute of the first half with Kansas leading 23-22. In more than three minutes of action, he turned the ball over twice, grabbed a defensive rebound, fouled out and missed a three-pointer, coming out with the Jayhawks trailing 33-27. He remained seated on the bench for the remainder of the competition.

Storr’s minutes were part of a first half that saw Kansas trail 42-36 against the visiting Sun Devils. The Jayhawks quickly turned things around in the second half, outscoring their opponent 38-13 en route to a 19-point victory. According to Kansas Stats & Info, the 13 second-half points were the fewest the Jayhawks have allowed in a half since February 23, 2013 (nine points against TCU).

Storr’s understated performance dropped his season average to a career low of 18.8 minutes and seven points on 41.3 percent shooting. He’s also averaging 2.1 rebounds and one assist in this limited action.

Jayhawks head coach Bill Self was recently criticism of Storr’s performance after a recent home loss to West Virginia, in which Storr went scoreless in 15 minutes of action.

While Storr bounced back with 11 points and five rebounds on five-of-eight shooting in a 99-48 win over UCF, the broader trends point to a decrease in playing time and production. The high-profile transfer commit is averaging just 14.8 minutes per game, four points and 2.6 rebounds on 34 percent shooting in Kansas’ last six games — the last three against conference opponents.

The Jayhawks maintain their 11th place in the latest rankings AP Pollsecond best in the Big 12 behind Iowa State (No. 3). I can’t afford any growing pains with current conferences and upcoming high-profile games. As the games go by, Storr seems to be drifting further away from the Jayhawks’ starting lineup.
