A picture shared on Facebook claims WNBA players gave an ultimatum, saying, “It’s either us or the flag.” »

Verdict: false

There is no record of WNBA players collectively making this statement. The claim originated in a satirical article.

Fact check:

The movement of professional athletes kneeling during the national anthem has resumed following the death of George Floyd. the death in custody in Minneapolis, according to The New York Times. Many athletes have engaged in similar forms of peaceful protest during the national anthem in recent weeks, along with players from two WNBA teams. outgoing July 25, for example.

THE picture says WNBA players also issued an ultimatum: “It’s either us or the flag.” » Above what appears to be a title are two photos, one of female basketball players and one of iconic elevation of the American flag at Iwo Jima during World War II.

But the Daily Caller News Foundation found no record of the WNBA collectively issuing the ultimatum on the National Women’s Basketball Players Association website or his Twitter account. Such a move would almost certainly have made headlines, but there appears to be no credible reporting on this subject.

This inaccurate statement appears to come from a articlepublished on the satirical site The glorious American, which contains the same title and photos as the shared image. The glorious American describes himself as a “fake news publication” and uses the slogan “Satire for the Right”. And the wrong.

THE Facebook post fails to convey satirical origins, a common way for misinformation to spread on social media. We believe this statement to be false.
