Emory’s fifth annual Women’s Sports and Wellness Conference and Health Summit will take place Saturday, August 12, providing a forum to learn and discuss the most relevant and impactful topics for female athletes .

The full-day event will be held at Emory University School of Medicine (100 Woodruff Circle, Atlanta, Georgia 30322) and will feature more than 30 expert speakers and thought leaders in the field of medicine. women’s athletics. Virtual registration is also available.

The aim of the conference is to empower women and girls through sport and exercise. New this year will be a session on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in sports, which will include discussions on why DEI in sports is important; the history of women in sport; current NCAA policies on transgender athletes; navigating mental health medications and sport; and adaptive athletes.

The keynote address will be delivered by Markesha Henderson, associate professor and executive director of strategic sports planning at Clark Atlanta University, who will speak on “The Invisible Woman in Sports: Strategies for Being Seen and Heard.”

“Sports and athletics have the power to move society forward,” says Courtney Gleason, director of programming for the Emory Women’s Sports and Wellness Conference and director of the Emory Women’s Athlete Program . “Diversity, equity, and inclusion in sport are linked to DEI in other facets of personal, professional, and societal experiences. This conference serves as a platform to further education and discussion on these and other important topics relating to female athletes.»

Additionally, the conference will feature presentations from healthcare professionals from across medical disciplines who will discuss current topics in sports medicine, including focused discussions ranging from pickleball and tennis elbow to pregnant and postpartum athlete , the latest consensus recommendations on concussion and nutrition and hydration considerations to optimize sports performance. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of sports injuries commonly seen in adult and youth female athletes and learn about the most current therapeutic interventions to optimize recovery and prevent re-injury.

The conference is aimed at healthcare professionals as well as community participants: physicians, athletic trainers, physiotherapists, sports dietitians, sports psychologists, school administrators, youth and adult female athletes, coaches, parents and all those who are interested in the important topic of female athletes. . Continuing education credits are available for people working in the medical field. All are invited to attend and encouraged to join the conversation.
