Douglas gives honest answer to lack of targets after two games originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
DeMario “Pop” Douglas is the most dynamic wide receiver in history New England Patriots He’s fast, he runs well, he can gain yards after the catch, and he can even be part of the running game on jet sweeps and similar types of plays.
And yet, despite the myriad ways Douglas could be used on offense, he barely touched the ball during the first two weeks of the season.
Douglas caught two passes for 13 yards on three targets in the Week 1 win over Cincinnati BengalsHe has been targeted zero (!) times in Sunday’s Week 2 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Zero target, zero transport, zero production.
Douglas told reporters Monday that not scoring against the Seahawks was “really tough.” Asked if he got to show off his skills, the second-year receiver said: “Last year. Not this year yet.”
Does Douglas think he runs good routes?
“Watch the film, you can see it,” he told reporters, as seen in the video player above. “But things happen for a reason, and when my time comes, I’ll show it.”
Fortunately for Douglas, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo admitted in his postgame press conference Sunday that finding ways to get the young wideout involved in the offense needs to be a priority.
“Yeah, we have to move him forward,” Mayo told reporters. “We have to put plans in place for him. He’s one of our most explosive players, and it’s up to us as coaches to put that together.”
The Patriots’ passing attack has been rather disappointing over the last two games and ranks 29th out of 32 teams in passing yards per game (122.5).
The Patriots’ receivers were barely used Sunday. Ja’Lynn Polk (two receptions, 12 yards, one touchdown) and KJ Osborn (one reception, seven yards) were the only players at that position to catch a pass from the quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
