Davon Godchaux takes issue with Pats fans’ ‘Fire Mayo’ chants originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
New England Patriots fans have expressed their frustration with the team’s ineptitude. 40-7 defeat on Saturday to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Boos and chants of “Fire Mayo” rained down from the stands at Gillette Stadium toward the end of the Patriots’ loss. As New England fell to 3-13 this season in embarrassing fashion, fans made their disgust with Jerod Mayo and the dire state of the organization clear.
Pats defensive tackle Davon Godchaux heard the chants and didn’t appreciate the fans clamoring for the first-year head coaching job.
“I heard it. I understand. (The fans are) pissed. They pay their money for season tickets and to see the Patriots… “I’m OK with rebuilding the Patriots because I’ve had success over the last 20 years, so I’m doing well, but a lot of people can’t I can’t stand this.” Godchaux told reporters.
“I know we’re not tanking here. We always want to win football games, but the ‘Fire Mayo’ chants are just ridiculous. I mean, this guy’s first year, first season. It’s not okay be golden. We did it. I don’t expect to win a Super Bowl this year. I understand.
Godchaux also thinks the fans went too far with the booing.
“The fans could have been more classy with the boos and stuff like that,” he said. “It’s embarrassing, I understand, but at the end of the day you play for pride.”
Mayo ignored the chants during their post-match press conference.
“You hear these things, but at the same time, they pay to sit in these seats. We need to play better and if we play better we won’t need to hear this stuff,” he said.
Much to the dismay of restless Pats fans, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported ahead of Saturday’s game, Mayo’s job should be “safe” for 2025. Of course, things could change if New England finds a new low in next Sunday’s season finale against the Buffalo Bills .
