While playing on the PGA Tour Champions this week, Fred Couples told a funny story about the 1992 Westchester Classic.
“1992, I’m playing the 72nd hole at the Westchester Classic, I’m playing well. I hit a drive down the left side, it’s a par 5 with the wind and I made it around the corner, but I’m in the rough.
“205 (on the hole), I like the 6 (iron), Joe (LaCava) likes the 7 (iron), I go with the 7. I hit it, not enough.
“I know he knows that, but I’m doing this with the 7 iron right next to the bag…”
Couples then launched the club, demonstrating what he did in 1992 after being thwarted by LaCava’s advice.
“I’m going to play the hole, make par,” Couples continued.
“We flew to Pebble Beach. I’m going to the driving range on Tuesday to practice testing my clubs. No 7 iron.”
“Joe (LaCava), what’s going on? No 7-iron! Where’s my 7-iron?”
“He’s back on the 18th fairway where you left him,” LaCava replied.
Couples remembers how he felt at that moment: “I don’t know if I laughed at first or if I was mad, but I lost my mind with him. But then I had to laugh, because, you know, I just let it all out.”
“This is the story.”
