Naomi Osaka accessed his first service on Wednesday on the Stade Court at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. But the rest of the match was a challenge for the quadruple Grand Slam champion.
Osaka took a break from Camila Osorio in the first set, then lost her service twice as much in a 6-4, 6-4 defeat in the first round at the BNP Paribas Open. It was Osorio’s first victory in the main draw at Indian Wells.
Osorio, who played Wednesday’s match with a yellow star sticker on her left cheek, will face Clara Towson from Denmark in the second round.
Osorio previously lost in right sets in Osaka at the Australian Open 2022. She beat a pair of 10 best players in her career, leading to Elina Svitolina (6) from Ukraine in 2021 and Caroline Garcia de France in 2023.
Although Osaka has entered the main draw ranked 56th and Osorio is ranked 53rd, Osorio’s victory felt an upheaval, given what Osaka has accomplished in her career. It may be the biggest victory in Osorio’s career, the victory making it the first Colombia player to beat a world n ° 1.
Osorio did not play anything near a perfect match, but she kept Osaka quite uncomfortable to win the victory. The 23 -year -old woman mixed in drops, angles and slices to keep Osaka on her toes, and the Osorio service was strong throughout the evening.
Osorio has often forced Osaka with a net. The 27 -year -old Japanese tennis star was able to recover well, but she kept it in limbo and sometimes even unbalanced between the net and the basic line.
It was a delicate match for Osaka, who played with balance and energy despite her toes on most of the match.
After losing the first set, Osaka immediately paused to start the second. But she then won the second match with her return match before lowering a break again.
The second set then became if Osaka could be problems to solve her way to a victory despite her duty by Osorio.
Osaka then saved a match point, down 5-3, but wasted an advance of 40-0 in the next match that could have equalized the score. Instead, Osorio stole the game and, in doing so, sealed the match.
Few players have a more interesting story in the stadium court at Indian Wells as Osaka. She won the title here in 2018, winning the first tournament in her professional career which launched her in celebrity. In 2022, she was heckled in an incident that drew international attention.
In four appearances since the victory of the BNP Paribas Open, Osaka has not reached the quarter -finals.
