Biden signs executive order to oversee and invest in AI

President Joe Biden signed a vast decree on artificial intelligence on Monday, paving the way for some industry regulations and funding for the U.S. government to invest more in the technology. From a report: The order is broad, and its goals range from civil rights and industrial regulations to a wave of government hiring. In a media call announcing the order Sunday, a senior White House official, who asked not to be named under the terms of the call, said AI has so many facets that Effective regulation had to cast a wide net. “AI policy is like running in a decathlon, and there are 10 different events here,” the official said. “And we don’t have the luxury of just choosing ‘we’re just going to do security,’ ‘we’re just going to do fairness,’ or ‘we’re just going to do privacy.’ You have to do all of those things. »

The official also called for “meaningful bipartisan legislation” to further advance the nation’s AI interests. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., held a private forum in September with industry leaders but has yet to introduce significant legislation on AI. Part of this order builds on a previous non-binding agreement reached in July by seven of the largest US technology companies developing AI, such as hiring external experts to probe the weaknesses of their systems and sharing their critical conclusions. The order leverages the Defense Production Act to legally require these companies to share safety test results with the federal government.
