Bédard rewards “electric crowd” with goal in Blackhawks’ home opener

Bédard’s presence alone was enough to create the most electric atmosphere at the United Center, especially at the start of the match, in some time. The young star is expected to help accelerate Chicago’s rebuild, becoming the next face of the franchise after former Blackhawks forwards Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, who led them to Stanley Cup victories in 2010, 2013 and 2015.

The anticipation surrounding Bédard’s first home game was present throughout the day. He slapped fans’ hands during the annual red carpet ceremony in the afternoon. He received the loudest cheers during the players’ announcements. During the first televised timeout, the Blackhawks played a video montage of Bédard, featuring clips from his childhood, his years with Regina in the Western Hockey League and his international games with Canada.

Bédard said the atmosphere lived up to his expectations.

“Even more so, I would say,” he said. “I’ve heard so many good things and obviously seen it in pre-season. Even when I got drafted, we had a pretty electric crowd there, it was awesome. Just to finally have this real game and see how energetic they are, how much they love us, it’s awesome and we couldn’t say more about how much we appreciate it.

With his goal on Saturday, Bédard has five points (two goals, three assists) in his first six games in the NHL. He has received compliments on how he has handled everything so far, whether from his teammates or opponents.

“I don’t know if anyone has honestly been in a situation like that,” Golden Knights center Jack Eichel said before the game. “He’s probably gotten the most attention, but it seems like he’s handling the situation really well.

“Having spent some time with him, I know his dedication to hockey and his work ethic. Hopefully he’s just enjoying his first few weeks in the NHL and taking it all in. Obviously, he will be a star in the league. Since I’ve seen him, it looks like he’s been playing for a while now, and he’s obviously a confident player. You like to see that.

“He plays, he attacks. I don’t know exactly what he’s going through – a big market like this in Chicago – but I’m sure he has guys there that he leans on, and his teammates are doing a good job of making It’s fun for him.

Bédard has already endeared himself to Chicago and added to that in his first home game. He’s been through a lot these past few weeks, but he’s loved every moment.

“Yeah, it’s been pretty wild. Since the start of camp, it’s been crazy, but it’s not at all something I consider negative,” Bédard said. “I’m really grateful to be in the position I’m in, and very few people get this opportunity and are so lucky. I look at it like that.

“I’m living a dream and I feel very lucky for it. But it’s crazy and busy. I am human too; I may be a little tired. But it’s been good and I’m enjoying it.
