Member schools are Boston College (joined 2005), the University of CaliforniaBerkeley (joined in 2024), University of Clemson,, Duke University,, Florida State University (joined 1990), the Georgia Institute of Technology (joined 1979), the University of Louisville (joined 2014), the Miami University (joined 2004), the Northern Carolina University,, North Carolina State UniversityTHE Pittsburgh University (joined 2013), South Methodist University (joined in 2024), University of Stanford (joined in 2024), University of Syracuse (joined 2013), the University of Virginia,, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (joined 2004), and Wake Forest University. THE University of Notre Dame (joined 2013) is a member in all sporty apart Football gridiron.
The southern conference had been organized in 1921 to promote and govern intercolllegial athletics. In 1953, some of the member schools estimated that the conference had become too large and too heavy for the competition sports programming. During the Conference spring meeting, seven schools retire and formed the acc. Virginia, who had not been a member of the South Conference, finally joined the new organization, while the Southern Carolina UniversityAn original member withdrew in 1971.
