British tennis legend Andy Murray showed off his football skills during a semi-final match at the Cincinnati Masters in Ohio and it could have seen him penalized.
When a ball came his way during the match against Canadian Milos Raonic, Murray half-volleyed it towards the crowd.
But as the ball headed towards the spectators, the high kick narrowly missed the chair umpire’s head.
A pointed look from the referee showed he was not impressed.
Murray could have been penalized for this decision. ATP regulations state: “Players must not hit, kick or throw a tennis ball violently, dangerously or in anger while at the tournament venue, except for the reasonable purpose of scoring a point during a match.”
However, despite the near miss, Murray avoided disqualification and scored a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the Canadian to advance to the final.
It was Murray’s fifth victory against Raonic this season, who committed two double faults that set the tone for the competition.
This victory strengthens Murray’s bid to displace Novak Djokovic from the top spot.
