The April 2023 issue of Golf course architecture is out now! It’s number 72, which means we’ve now completed four sets of 18 numbers โ€“ a truly complete tournament โ€“ โ€‹โ€‹of Golf course architecture.

This particular stage is also marked by a bumper problem, leading with the spectacular new Pointe-Hardy Golf Course in Saint Lucia, photographed by Jacob Sjoman, on the cover. I’m telling you about the new Coore & Crenshaw network which is currently being developed at the Cabot Saint Lucia complex, before its opening at the end of this year. Developer Ben Cowan-Dewar explains what makes this clifftop course a Caribbean dream.

For our main article, Adam Lawrence considers how golf can find new ways to reduce its water consumption, and some of the new innovations in turf that could help. Maidstone Club’s John Genovesi, Trinity Forest’s Kasey Kauff, turf specialists John Holmes and Jim Culley, and architects Bill Coore and Nathan Crace all provide insight into this crucial subject.

Adam also reports a visit to Belleair CC in Florida, where Jason Straka and Dana Fry completed a stunning transformation of the Donald Ross-designed West course.

We speak with a Canadian architect Rod Whitman, one of golf’s great collaborators, having worked with architects including Pete Dye and Bill Coore. He gives an interesting insight into these partnerships, as well as his current work with Dave Axland and Keith Cutten.

Somewhere else, GCA editor Toby Ingleton gives his opinion on the new local rule model from the R&A and the USGA; golf course architect Forrest Richardson describes a unique green design he presented at the Promontory Club in Utah; and Jonathan Smith of the GEO Foundation considers what progress has been made in green design since he wrote for the very first issue of GCA in 2005.

Our Tee Box section includes news of WAC Golf’s new nineteen-hole short course which is under construction at Bandon Dunes; The Mackenzie & Ebert Renovation Municipality of Hankley In England; Stirling and Martin a new route takes shape near Bucharest, Romania; Edwin Roald’s use of automated machine guidance Selfoss in Iceland; and Andrew Green’s William Flynn-inspired renovation at Indian Creek in Florida.

We hope you enjoy reading!
