LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey said she underwent a heart procedure over the summer after doctors “accidentally” discovered a blocked artery in her heart.
Mulkey, 61, says doctors discovered a coronary artery was almost completely blocked. She initially said she had gone to seek medical help for an undisclosed ongoing problem.
Mulkey ended up having two stents placed in a coronary artery in June.
“I never felt bad” Mulkey said, via ESPN. “I’m still a little in shock that we discovered this by accident. My message in sharing this is: if you’re over 50, go get a stress test.
“Some of my old teammates told me, ‘We’re going to do it.’ That’s why I share these things. I’m an open book if this is something that can help people. It’s just a great lesson for all of us who think this won’t happen to us.
Mulkey led LSU to a national championship in April and with the return of the All-America forward Angel Reesewho was the most outstanding player of the Final Four, transfers Hailey Van Lith and Aneesah Morrowshould start the season at the top of the standings.
Mulkey too agreed to a record $36 million, 10-year extension earlier this month, which will keep her in Baton Rogue through the 2033 season.
