Oceania Football Association president Basil Scarsella has resigned after a stormy executive meeting in Auckland.
Scarsella orchestrated a major coup last December when he persuaded world football leaders to grant Oceania direct entry into the 2006 World Cup.
This decision was controversially overturned at a FIFA meeting a few months ago.
Scarsella resigned after Saturday’s meeting passed a vote of no confidence in him by a 6-5 majority.
Oceania includes Australia and New Zealand as well as a number of Pacific island states.
