Iga Swiatek is one of the most popular people in Poland and that’s why she is often asked to speak about certain topics.
Most of the time the topics are political in nature, but the four-time Grand Slam champion tries to avoid them, because she knows that many people would not agree with her opinion, and that is why she does not want to face the consequences for the rest of his life.
Recently she spoke to Rzeczpospolita, discussing a lot of things, like her participation in the Billie Jean King Cup, and one of the questions asked was also if she wanted to talk about certain topics, like abortion, which is currently a topic discussed in Poland.
“I’ve thought about it a lot, but our country is so divided and politics is so emotionally charged that choosing one side or the other can have consequences that I will have to deal with for the rest of my life, and I don’t feel ready for that.”
According to Swiatek, she doesn’t want to explain her thoughts to half the people who wouldn’t agree with her opinion, and that’s why she decided not to speak out instead.
“I don’t feel like I can explain to half the country why I said what I did. There are many questions that need to be raised. I would love to, but I would then create an environment that would not allow me to do that. Focus fully on tennis and remember that I am first and foremost an athlete, a tennis player.”
The Pole recalls that she is above all a tennis player and an athlete, not a politician, and that is why she chose this approach.
“This is what I know, this is what I do, this is what I try to bring to the world, because this is what I am good at. By becoming a lawyer for one parts, I would put too much on my shoulders. And I feel like I’m trying to do a lot on social issues anyway.
