On Friday, the NCAA football rules committee proposed changes to the rules of time of injuries for the 2025-26 season.
The members of the Committee, who met in Indianapolis this week, recommended that if the medical staff are entering the field to assess an injured player after the ball is spotted by the crew officiating for the next game, the team of this player would be invoiced.
If the team has no dead time, a game penalty of 5 yards would be assessed.
Before becoming official, all rules of rules must be approved by the NCAA game rules monitoring committee, which should discuss football rules on April 16.
The proposal for an expiration delay of injuries was made after many members of the NCAA university football community raised concerns about the strategies in which players simulate an injury to stop the momentum of the opposition or to avoid using a waiting period.
This has been a subject of discussion for the NCAA football rules committee in recent years. Before the 2021 season, an executive was instituted which allows a school or a conference to request an post-match video review led by Steve Shaw, the NCAA editor / national coordinator of civil servants, concerning questionable actions involving injuries.
If it is determined that a player has simulated an injury to manipulate the rules, the conference conference is informed and any possible disciplinary action can be taken by the conference office.
The impulse to recommend this change is to provide a mechanism that can reduce the injury tractor because committee members think that these actions negatively affect the overall perception of the game.
“The Committee identified the deadline after the ball was spotted as the most blatant violations of the rule for the expiration time and addresses the issue in this way,” said Kirby Smart, Committee of the Committee and Georgia coach. “Having a defined time when the match is arrested for an injured player should hopefully help reduce the strategy to make false injuries of players.”
Overtime expiration time
The members of the Committee also proposed that if a match reaches a third extension, each team would have a waiting period to use until the conclusion of the game.
Currently, the teams receive a waiting period for each extension period. At the start of the third extension, the teams alternate during the execution of 2 points until a winner is decided.
Committee members do not think that the game should be stopped for dead time when there are only two games per additional period if a game reaches a third extension.
Other rules of rules
The football rules committee:
- Recommended that when the decision on instant rereading is announced, the referee only says that the call on the ground is “confirmed” or “overturned”. The terms “confirmed” and “supports” would not be used.
- Proposed that no player is in the direct line of Snap at the potential kicker on clearancebox. No player could be within the framework of the Vivaneau. It would be an illegal training if the team does not have the required number of players online. In addition, if the Vivaneau is at the end of the line by training, the Vivaneau would lose the protection of melee kicks and the opposition could line a player on the living.
- Recommended if a player of a kick -off team makes a “T” signal during the kick, the game would be whistled dead.
- Improved rules proposed concerning the words or signals which distract the opponents when they prepare to put the ball in play. No player could call defensive signals which simulate the sound or the rate of offensive signals. The defensive terms “moving” and “stem” would be reserved for players on this side of the ball and could not be used by the offense.
- Recommended that after the waiting period of two minutes in one or the other half, if the defense commits a fault with 12 or more players on the field and that they participate in the room, the officials would administer a penalty of 5 yards. The offensive team would have the opportunity to reset the game clock at the time at the start of the game. If the 12th player tries to leave the field and has no influence on the game, the defensive team would be penalized 5 meters without adjustment to the game clock.
- Proposed that the coach-player communication, similar to the technology implemented for the football subdivision Bowl last year, is permissive for the teams participating in the football championship subdivision.
Targeting
The committee had an in -depth discussion on the health and safety of players, including the targeting rule. The Committee will request the comments of the conference commissioner and a more in -depth discussion on the safety rules of the players.
