The conference was founded in 1979 by seven oriental institutions with notable male basketball programs: Georgetown, University of Syracuse,, ProvidenceSeton Hall, St. John’s, Connecticut, and Boston College. Villanova joined the following year and the Pittsburgh University In 1982.
