Flames sign defenseman Tyson Barrie to one-year contract

The Calgary Flames have reportedly signed defenseman Tyson Barrie to a one-year deal worth $1.25 million, according to a report from Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff. Barrie, who joined the Flames on a professional tryout (PTO), has now secured his spot on the roster for the upcoming season.

Or, at least until the trade deadline, if the Flames choose to trade him based on their place in the standings.

Recent roster moves suggested a deal was imminent, with prospect Hunter Brzustewicz being reassigned to the minors, paving the way for the addition of Barrie.

The Flames parted ways with Noah Hanifin, Chris Tanev, Nikita Zadorov and Oliver Kylington over the past year, leaving the roster depleted of veteran defensemen. While Barrie is no longer a reliable top-four defenseman and may not be the elite power play quarterback he once was, he brings valuable experience that the Flames rely on can appeal during their reconstruction.

Barrie is known for his offensive contributions and power play abilities, making him a potentially valuable asset for Calgary. With 109 goals and 505 points in 809 career NHL games, the veteran defenseman has proven his scoring prowess throughout his NHL career. Unfortunately, he had a poor season with the Nashville Predators, scoring just one goal and 15 points in 41 games.

Barrie’s contract has no trade protections and the one-year contract means he could be moved if he is productive and the Flames are not a playoff team. If he performs well, Calgary could potentially flip him for future assets at the trade deadline.

For now, Barrie has an opportunity to show he still has a lot to offer in the NHL. “I want to reach 1,000 games and try to win a Stanley Cup,” Barrie told Global News this week.
