Former Bakersfield Condors defenseman Markus Niemelainen has signed a one-year contract in Germany with Eisbaren Berlin, it was announced last week.

See the original article to view embedded media.

Written by the Edmonton Oilers The third round pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Niemelainen spent the last year playing for the Condors, where he scored one goal and added four assists for five points in 35 regular-season games. He also appeared in two playoff games, but did not record a point.

Since starting his North American professional career in the 2020-21 season, Niemelainen has played 43 regular season NHL games, recording one assist. During that span, he has also played 120 regular season AHL games, recording 26 points.

Although Niemelainen’s contract is only for one season, he could choose to stay abroad in the near future. He has had success playing in the Finnish Liiga and could have the opportunity to play a significant role for Eisbaren Berlin.
