What is United States women’s national team What the next World Cup cycle looks like will largely depend on who is hired as the team’s next coach. There is undeniably a large group of talented young players to develop ahead of a 2027 tournament that could be played on home soil.
Blair Newman already ranked and analyzed 50 of these prospects for the next cycle earlier this year. The subject is arousing renewed interest given the place in which American women find themselves. There is no new coach yet. The 2023 World Cup went horribly. And, especially on Sunday, the team got a taste of what the next generation could look like thanks to a long-overdue roster rotation.
Mia Fishel and Jaedyn Shaw each came on at halftime and each player scored their first international goal in their second appearance for the United States. It was easy to imagine that the front line would be pulling the strings for the United States for years, especially after 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson joined the group.
It was also easy to forget how much talent there was on the field or even in camp.
