Pete Nakos explains why Chip Kelly leaving Ucla for Ohio State is not a sign of a bigger problem for college football | 02/27/24
UCLA the head coach Chip Kelly leave this role to become the offensive coordinator of state of ohio, a team in the same conference now, has quickly become one of the biggest stories of the college football offseason. For many, this has even sparked concerns about coaches’ ability to retain their head coaches.
Kelly’s decision was discussed as a topic on Andy Staples On3When Pete Nakos And Andy Staples Let’s break down the biggest stories of the offseason. In both their cases, however, Nakos and Staples agreed that Kelly becoming Ohio State’s OC is not a sign of a larger problem for college football as a whole.
“First of all, Chip Kelly was trying to get NFL offensive coordinator jobs. He didn’t have any. » Andy Staples said. “But the first domino in all this is Jeff Hafley exit Boston College as head coach to become the defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers.
The decision made by Jeff Hafley was widely cited by Hafley as a lifestyle decision, allowing him to become a coach and move away from challenges such as NIL. These concerns have caused Hafley to become a key part of the story of several head coaches who left to become assistants. Interestingly, this was also the move that opened up the job for Chip Kelly at Ohio State.
“Boston College is hiring Bill O’Brien, who was just hired as OC at Ohio State. Chip Kelly goes on to work for his former quarterback and former assistant, Ryan Day at Ohio State, and, man, the food for thought that came from that decision. “Chip Kelly is leaving his head coaching position to become an OC in the same league. Holy shit, what’s going on? But it was a big deal.
At that point, Pete Nakos came out and claimed that it wasn’t a trend yet, pointing out that Chip Kelly was having problems at UCLA.
“I don’t think it’s a trend yet, Andy. I know everyone wants to call this a trend. Now, all that being said, I think Chip going from UCLA to Ohio State needs a lot more analysis. The fact that he wanted out, I don’t know if he was completely in tune with Martin Jarmond. I think there are a lot of them out there.
At this point, Andy Staples came back to point out how bad things were for Chip Kelly at UCLA. In doing so, he gave Kelly another reason to leave.
“They were going to fire him after the season if it wasn’t perfect,” Staples said.
In addition to this, Pete Nakos pointed out that Eric Bieniémy I just left the NFL for college. So it’s not like things are one-way in terms of coaching movement right now.
“Yeah. I think the one that pokes holes in the “people are leaving college for the NFL” is from earlier this week, that’s right, Eric Bieniemy took the OC job at UCLA… But it’s so intriguing and, yeah, I lumped Chip Kelly and Jeff Hafley together. So we’re kind of aligned on that one.
