When Chinese tennis star Peng Shua disappeared from public view after accusing a senior Communist Party official of sexual assault, the Women’s Tennis Association said it would no longer hold tournaments in China until Peng’s whereabouts were known. And a full, uncensored investigation was conducted into the allegations. That was two years ago.
There is still no official word on Peng, who has not been seen since a brief appearance at the 2022 Winter Olympics. No investigation has been opened. But despite that, Tuesday in Beijing, the $8 million WTA China Open begins.
