Karolina Muchova has withdrawn from next month’s Australian Open due to a wrist injury that also ruled her out of the WTA Finals in October, the world number 8 said.
The 27-year-old Czech had one of her best seasons this year and finished second to No. 1 Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros before reaching the semi-finals of the US Open in September, where she suffered a problem with his right wrist.
She was scheduled to compete for the first time in the season-ending championships in Cancun before withdrawing and being replaced by Maria Sakkari.
“It’s not my favorite thing to share, especially at the start of a new season, but unfortunately the wrist pain came back in the middle of my preparation,” Muchova, a former Melbourne Park semi-finalist, said on Instagram Thursday.
“So I have to postpone the start of the season and first fully heal my wrist. It’s frustrating but I have to stay positive, recover and prepare for the rest of the year.”
The Australian Open takes place from January 14 to 28.
