February 25 – Tyler – The UTPB women’s tennis team opened its 2025 season this weekend at the Tyler Junior College.
After falling 5-2 in his first game of the season against Harding University on Saturday, February 22, the Falcons won an exciting 4-3 victory on the Delta State University on Sunday, February 23.
The weekend ended with a 4-0 defeat against n ° 19 of the Mississippi College, classified at the national level, on Monday, February 24.
Teodora Vrucan and Tuva Asplund obtained the first double victory of the year of the UTPB with a 6-4 decision on Sofia Zulim and Ece Boylu of Harding, but the only points of the UTPB against Harding came in the points n ° 5 and n ° 6 in simple. After the Falcons followed 5-0. Paige Bott defeated Itza Rogel 6-1, 6-1 to singles n ° 5 and Dinethya Dharmaratne beat Zulim 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3) in a third set breaker at n ° 6 in simple n ° 6.
The culmination of the weekend was the victory of the 4-3 return of the UTPB against the Delta State. After falling in doubles, UTPB then fell 3-0 to start the simple. Needing four consecutive victories, it all started with a 7-5, 6-1 victory for Fanny Bergstrom over Yasmina Mayer in simple n ° 2.
Dharmaratne followed with a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Lara Torres in simple n ° 5 and Vrucan defeated Maria Caride in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, in single n ° 3. In the winner’s match, Sophia Rashid won an impressive 6-1, 6-4 victory against Isabella Llano in simple n ° 6.
During the last match against n ° 19 of the Mississippi College, Bergstrom and Bott fell 6-2 in double n ° 1 while the closest match in single was a defeat 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 Three sets per boott in position n ° 4.
Combined for the weekend, Dharmaratne was 3-0 in simple (n ° 5-6) while Rashid was 2-0 in simple n ° 6 and Vrucan was 2-1 in simple n ° 3.
