London: The total prize money for the 2022 Wimbledon Championships will be a record £40.35 million, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) has announced.

This shows an increase of 11.1% compared to 2021.

The winners of the men’s and women’s singles at this year’s grass-court Grand Slam will each receive £2 million, a 17.6% increase on last year but still below the £2.35 million in 2019.

The AELTC has insisted that the prize money distribution for 2022 continues to place emphasis on supporting players in the early rounds of the event.

As a result, the prize money for qualifying competitions has received a 26% increase compared to 2021 and singles main draw players competing in the first round will play for £50,000, an increase of 4.2% compared to 2021 and 11.1% compared to 2019.

This year, Wimbledon is scheduled to take place from June 27 to July 10. With the AELTC deciding to ban Russian and Belarusian players from this year’s tournament, the ATP and WTA have announced that they will not award ranking points at the competition.

Ian Hewitt, Chairman of the All England Club, said: “From the first round of qualifying competition to the crowning of the champions, this year’s prize money distribution aims to reflect the importance of the players to the Championships as we look to continue to deliver one of the world’s most significant sporting events, and with a particularly special tournament ahead of us as we celebrate 100 years of Centre Court on Church Road.”
