Nylander seemed to say: “I was sure to be offside”, when Holmberg’s empty net was called a good goal.
When Pontus Holmberg scored on the empty net in the third period against the Chicago Blackhawks, all that William Nylander could do was stirred his finger.
With less than two minutes to play in the third period, John Tavares picked up the washer just after he got out of the Chicago area and returned to find Nylander, who then found Pontus Holmberg for the empty net to seal the victory 5-2 for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
However, the Blackhawks would contest the goal of offside after Nylander seemed not to leave the area before Tavares returned it. To everyone, the referees did not recall the goal, allowing Holmberg his third goal in the last two games.
And when the cameras rushed to Nylander, sitting next to Holmberg on the bench after the goal, his lips said: “I was sure that it was off.”
Like everyone in the arena and those who look at home.
“As was, (Toronto’s video coach Jordan Bean), continued to say that it looks like a goal,” said Maple Leafs head coach, Craig Berube after victory.
“And then it was clear before (the referees) decided that it was a good goal. So we had the chance to get it.”
The fifth goal of the Holmberg season helped Toronto win his first regulatory match in Chicago against the Blackhawks since February 12, 2003, over 22 years ago. This victory moved the Maple Leafs first in the Atlantic division with 72 points, one in front of the Florida Panthers.
“I thought we had picked it up after the first period and started getting time in zone O”, “ Berube said.
“I thought, in the second, we got the offensive. “”
