NASCAR Driver pay is a topic that has come up several times recently. William Byron has now spoken out on the subject. So how do Byron and other Cup Series drivers compare to the Jeff Gordons and Tony Stewarts of old?
On the Conversation with Kenny with Kenny Wallace, William Byron spoke about driver pay. His teammate Hendrick Motorsports Kyle Larson raised the subject with Wallace when he was on the show not long ago.
So, has driver pay fallen, even for sports stars?
“No, I think a lot of it is false,” Byron said when asked by Kenny Wallace. “It’s definitely not true for great drivers or guys who win races. I think there’s a, and I heard Kyle (Larson) talk about it, there’s an average and I think if we have drivers coming in, they race for whatever that number is and just do lower ; it is important that we maintain this value.
“I think the drivers, we have a board and we have a lot of things going on behind the scenes to make sure that doesn’t happen. But yeah, I was really worried about it, but the best thing you can do is win races and compete up front and you’ll be in line to do what these guys are doing.
“It’s a performance sport, which will never change. Yes, that’s definitely the bottom line I suppose, and the overall average of the series has probably changed over the last few years, but I think it’s important that when new drivers come in, they demand their worth and I think that really establishes it. »
According to William Byron, it’s up to drivers to get what they pay for.
William Byron leading the next generation of young talent on and off the track
At just 26 years old, Byron has accomplished great things in NASCAR. He won more races in the Truck Series than any other rookie driver with seven total victories in 2016. The following year, he won the Xfinity Series championship.
Last year, Byron had the most Cup Series victories with six. Then he made Championship 4. Finally he came out and won the Daytona 500, having never finished better than P21 before. Few people his age have accomplished what he accomplished.
Now hearing Byron talk about driver pay, this guy is ready to take the next step. Often overlooked, keep an eye on Willy B. He makes an important point about driver pay. If new drivers come in and accept everything a team offers, it cheapens the power of the other drivers in the series.
